Closed season

A spawning closure applies in Gulf St Vincent and Spencer Gulf from 1 April to 31 July — targeting, taking and possessing King George whiting is prohibited there in that period. Open in other waters and outside those dates.

Why these rules exist

Minimum size is longitude-based: 32 cm east of 136°E (including all gulf waters) and 30 cm to the west. The daily bag is zone-based — 10 in Spencer Gulf, 5 in Gulf St Vincent and Kangaroo Island, 10 in all other waters — with matching boat limits of 30/15/30. King George whiting are slow-growing southern table fish; the gulf spawning closure protects breeding aggregations.
