Brown trout were the second salmonid introduced to Australia (1864 to Tasmania, from German eggs) and unlike rainbows they self-sustain in many catchments — the Snowy, Tumut and Goulburn populations are wild fish, not stocked. The yellow-flanked stream-bred browns under 40 cm fight harder pound-for-pound than any 60 cm hatchery fish.

Polaroid sight-fishing TAS lakes (Penstock Lagoon, Little Pine, Arthurs, Woods Lake) is the iconic technique — walk the shoreline at first light, spot tailing or cruising fish in 0.5–1.5 m water, cast a wet fly or small plastic ahead of them. Tassie Devil trolling the deep edge of Eucumbene / Jindabyne in spring as fish move shallow post-ice. Dry-fly fishing the evening rise on the Tas central plateau. Surface temps under 18°C mean active feed; above 22°C in midsummer they hold deep in the thermocline.
Big TAS browns are famously moon-active — full and new moon weeks bring the largest specimens (5 lb+) out for night-feeding sessions in shallow margins, the Lake Pedder and Great Lake mythology. Sea-run browns on the Derwent / Forth estuary mouths are also moon-strong, timing whitebait runs around spring tides.

Same season and licence framework as rainbows, and it varies by state. New South Wales requires a trout endorsement sticker on top of the Recreational Fishing Fee, with a closed season on the Snowy, Eucumbene and Thredbo rivers. Victoria's standard recreational licence covers trout with no separate endorsement, and closes rivers over the winter spawning run. Tasmania's Inland Fisheries Service issues its own inland angling licence — not the saltwater recreational one — with seasons that vary by fishery and some catch-and-release-only waters such as the Western Lakes. In New Zealand a Fish & Game licence is required and both season and bag vary by region. Wild fisheries are held to stricter bags than stocked lakes; the per-jurisdiction figures are above.
