Snapper (Pink Snapper) WA legal size & bag limits.

Snapper (Pink Snapper) (also known as Pink Snapper, Squire, Snapper) in Western Australia. Minimum legal size, daily bag limit, possession limit, slot rule — verified against the DPIRD WA guide, 2026.

In Western Australia, Snapper (Pink Snapper) has no minimum legal size and the daily bag limit is 2 (West Coast bioregion individual limit; 1 at the Abrolhos Islands, 2 in other bioregions) — counts toward the demersal scalefish mixed bag, with a possession limit of Governed by WA's general weight/days-based finfish possession limit, not a fixed per-species count. A slot limit applies: Minimum size is bioregional, not statewide: West Coast bioregion 500 mm (Lancelin to Black Point, east of Augusta) or 410 mm (Lancelin to Zuytdorp Cliffs, north of Kalbarri); 450 mm outside the West Coast bioregion. Season note: The West Coast bioregion (Kalbarri to Augusta) is closed to recreational BOAT fishing for demersal scalefish — including pink snapper — until Spring 2027 (land-based and charter outside Perth Metro are exempt). Pink snapper spawning closures also apply: Cockburn and Warnbro Sounds closed 1 August–31 January, with separate Shark Bay (Gascoyne) closures.

Slot rule

Minimum size is bioregional, not statewide: West Coast bioregion 500 mm (Lancelin to Black Point, east of Augusta) or 410 mm (Lancelin to Zuytdorp Cliffs, north of Kalbarri); 450 mm outside the West Coast bioregion.

Closed season

The West Coast bioregion (Kalbarri to Augusta) is closed to recreational BOAT fishing for demersal scalefish — including pink snapper — until Spring 2027 (land-based and charter outside Perth Metro are exempt). Pink snapper spawning closures also apply: Cockburn and Warnbro Sounds closed 1 August–31 January, with separate Shark Bay (Gascoyne) closures.

Why these rules exist

WA pink snapper has no single statewide minimum — size is bioregional (see slot rule). The West Coast demersal boat-fishing closure (to Spring 2027) is the dominant current rule. Bag limits are per-species individual caps that count toward the demersal scalefish "total mixed species" daily bag (2 in the West Coast bioregion, 1 at the Abrolhos Islands, 4 in other bioregions from 1 June 2026). Always confirm your bioregion before keeping a fish.

Source & verification

These limits are pulled from the DPIRD WA Recreational fishing guide 2026. Last verified June 2026.

Always check the official guide before keeping any fish. Regulations change. Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (Western Australia) updates its guide annually and occasionally mid-year. Fines for over-bag or undersized fish are significant.

Western Australia does not require a general licence to fish from the shore. A licence is needed only for specific activities — fishing from a powered boat (Recreational Fishing from Boat Licence), rock lobster, abalone, marron, south-west freshwater angling, and net fishing. Check WA licence requirements.
