FISHING LONG ISLAND

Long Island offers a remarkable spread of fishing along its 120-mile reach: the south-shore bays — Great South Bay, Moriches and Shinnecock — are productive fluke, striped bass and bluefish water, while the ocean beaches from Fire Island east see strong spring and fall striper runs in the surf. The North Shore and Long Island Sound add porgy, sea bass and blackfish over rocky structure. Run east toward Montauk and the rips concentrate the migration into one of the densest fall fisheries on the coast — but the bays and beaches closer to the city fish hard all season.
