When to fish for Leatherjacket: Leatherjackets feed through most of the tide, which makes them a genuinely reliable option when a target species has shut down.
Also known as Leathery, Six-spine Leatherjacket, Ocean Jacket, Chinaman Leatherjacket. Bait, technique, tide windows, and where the bite is on right now.
Leatherjacket — The bait thief with a locking spine — and a first-rate fillet. Also called Leathery, Six-spine Leatherjacket, Ocean Jacket, Chinaman Leatherjacket.
A leatherjacket's first dorsal spine locks bolt upright and cannot be folded down until a second, much smaller spine — the trigger — is released. It is the family trait that names the triggerfishes, and in the water it is how the fish wedges itself into a crevice so hard that a predator cannot pull it out. It is also why the fish is awkward in the hand. The other thing to know is the teeth: chisel-shaped incisors that clip 20 lb monofilament as cleanly as side-cutters, which is why leatherjackets are famous as bait thieves and why a short wire or heavy-fluoro bite trace changes a frustrating session into a good one.

Regional names can confuse anglers and cause misidentification. The table of common names below covers the most-used alternatives across Australia, New Zealand and the US:
Key to correct identification: check the regulations-authority species sheet for your state or territory before keeping any fish — minimum legal sizes, bag limits and identification guides are published by each fisheries department and are the authoritative source.

Everything about leatherjacket fishing follows from the mouth and the teeth. The mouth is tiny, so use a small long-shank hook in the #4 to #6 range and a bait cut small enough to cover it and no more — a big bait simply gets nibbled to nothing. The teeth are chisel-shaped incisors that clip 20 lb monofilament cleanly, so run a short bite trace of single-strand wire or very heavy fluorocarbon, or accept losing a rig every second fish. Fish over broken reef, weed beds, jetty pylons and marina pontoons in 2–20 m, keep the bait moving gently, and strike early on the first tap rather than waiting for weight — the second tap is usually the sound of your bait leaving. On the table they are outstanding, and they are skinned rather than scaled: cut behind the head and pull the leathery hide off in one piece.
Leatherjackets feed through most of the tide, which makes them a genuinely reliable option when a target species has shut down. The run-in over shallow reef and weed is best, and slack water fishes better for jackets than for almost anything else because the small baits sit naturally. Around jetties and pontoons they are catchable at any stage, which is why they are the standard fish for a first session with kids.
Effectively moon-independent. Light level and water clarity matter more — jackets are visual feeders and a clear, sunny day over weed beds fishes noticeably better than a dirty day after rain. If anything, bright conditions help, which is the reverse of most of the species on this site.
Figures come from each jurisdiction's own fisheries authority, with the source linked on every page above. Rules change — closures in particular are reset annually — so confirm with the authority before you keep a fish.
New South Wales folds every leatherjacket species into one combined bag rather than listing them separately, so the allowance is shared across whatever mix you catch — read the per-jurisdiction figures above. Worth knowing before you fill a bucket: leatherjackets are slow-growing, and a reef or jetty that has been cleaned out takes a long time to come back. There are more than sixty leatherjacket species in Australian waters and telling them apart is genuinely hard, which is part of why the bag is combined.
